Building North Market
It started as a conversation about access to good food in North Minneapolis, and now it’s a new kind social enterprise. Built with the community, for the community, North Market is a full-service grocery store, a center for wellness services and a community gathering place, all under one roof. North Market is the place to bring together what you eat with what you do to live your healthiest life. Good food at affordable prices, programs in nutrition, fitness and mindfulness, all in the company of your neighbors.
Projects like this don’t happen without a lot of help. When Pillsbury United Communities launched the idea, under the founding leadership of Chanda Smith Baker, Adair Mosley, Vanan Murugesan and Julia Donaldson, partners and funders stepped forward to be involved. North Memorial Health System joined as the anchor partner for wellness, and a number of foundations came provided early funding support. In 2017, the Minnesota State Legislature made a $2million appropriation to help bring North Market to life.
A Model for Community Wellness
North Market captured the attention of food access advocates, locally and nationally, before construction even began. Recognized for its unique status as a project of a non-profit social service organization, in partnership with a health system, that rose out of a community design process, the North Market model is one that can work in other communities. Raised in North Minneapolis, Cerise feels like she’s coming home to put her education and experience in managing co-ops to work. She’s paying it forward in the community she loves.
Customer Service Manager
You want a great customer experience? It’s what Althea does, and in her role as Customer Service Manager, she leads the rest of the North Market staff in doing the same.
Grocery Manager
National grocery store chain, local co-op, and specialty foods operations – Anthony has done it all. A Minneapolis native, he’s worked in the wholesale and retail food business on the East and West Coasts and in his home state.
Health Equity Programs Coordinator
Committed to healthy lives on the Northside, Kevalin joined the North Market Team as the Health Equity Programs Coordinator with one goal in mind – to help residents on the North Side lead healthy lives in community.
Deli and Bakery Manger
Northsider, experienced caterer and the mastermind behind Soul Food Sunday, Cory brings his energy and talent to the North Market Deli and Bakery as its manager.
Meat Manager
Butcher, media artist and retired Army National Guard Staff Sergeant, Teng managed the meat market at a large Asian grocery store in Minneapolis before coming to North Market to run our department offering fresh cut and packaged meat.
Accounting and Pricing Coordinator
North Market has never been done before. Anytime you have a project like that, you need folks who are highly organized, detail oriented and nimble. Very nimble. Mandi is all that. Her job is to work across the North Market enterprise to make certain business processes run without a hitch.
Produce Manager
Fedor’s Supervalu, GJ’s Supervalu, Kowalski’s Markets and now North Market, Joe has worked in the Produce Department at the grocery stores in this location since 1995. Born, raised and still living in North Minneapolis, Joe brings both retail and wholesale experience to his role at North Market.
Store Director
